Beating the Smog at the Taj Mahal — A Photographer’s Morning in Agra
Arriving at the Taj Mahal for sunrise sounds romantic… until you’re met with smog dense enough to erase the entire building. Rather than fight for the classic reflection pool shot (which was more “vapour” than “view”), I shifted to a quieter side perspective near the Mehmaan Khana pavilion — and ended up with a far more interesting image.
In this video, I’ll show you how I approached photographing the Taj Mahal when conditions weren’t perfect, plus a few travel and photography tips that go beyond the usual “arrive early and wear comfortable shoes” advice.

✨ Travel & Photography Tips
Buy the foreign tourist ticket — Yes it’s pricier, but you skip the massive queue and get actual photography time.
Get the reflection shot quickly, then abandon it — The side pavilions are quieter with cleaner angles. Choose left or right depending on sun direction.
Photograph the craftsmanship, not just the monument — Inlaid stones, carved jali screens, calligraphy — they’re works of art on their own.
Visit Mehtab Bagh (rear garden) — Across the Yamuna river for a rare perspective, especially at sunset.
If you can, see both sunrise and sunset — The Taj shifts from white to cream to gold depending on light. One visit is only half the experience.
🍽 Where to Eat in Agra
Petha (Agra’s signature sweet) — Panchhi Petha or Bhimsain Deendayal.
Bedai & Jalebi Breakfast — Deviram Sweets near the Taj.
Mughlai Dinner — Pinch of Spice or Esphahan (Oberoi Amarvilas).
Street Food — Head to Sadar Bazaar, stick to busy stalls.
🏨 Where to Stay
Budget: Hotel Alleviate
Mid-Range: Crystal Sarovar Premiere / Trident Agra
Luxury: The Oberoi Amarvilas — you can literally photograph the Taj from your balcony
📸 Good Tour Options
Sunrise Fast-Track Tour (Viator)
Private Photography Guide (GetYourGuide or local hire) — Worth it if you want someone who understands light & angles
❓Your Turn
If you’ve photographed the Taj Mahal — did you manage the iconic reflection shot, or did the smog and crowds defeat you too?
And did you get the classic “arched doorway frame” photo? Be honest. 😄
Let me know in the comments — I genuinely love hearing other photographers' battle stories.
