AI-Generated Image Descriptions Are Bad
Meta recently launched its much-awaited Twitter lookalike app, Threads. However, the app was released without an alt text field. In a blog post before the release, Meta touted that the "core accessibility features available on Instagram today, such as screen reader support and AI-generated image descriptions, are also enabled on Threads." AI-generated image descriptions do not generally make an image accessible because they're often just a string of random words. They lack context as well as other important visual details, as demonstrated in this short video. If you want to make your images and GIFs accessible on Threads, please write image descriptions directly in the caption of your post or do not post images until an alt text field has been added to the platform.
