Travelling with food allergies can be overwhelming. But it doesn't have to be if handled correctly by all parties.
Dealing with any medical emergency can be a frightening experience for anyone. But sometimes, reacting to someone with an allergic response can take minutes to identify, and minutes will seem like hours to the person who is experiencing this life-threatening trauma.
We were so thankful that Sheila took the time out of her busy clinical work day to spend some time with us explaining her own story to educate and enlighten anyone who is or maybe faced with this situation.
Her story was extremely educational as she took us through the signs and symptoms that one may experience, up to and during their first and subsequent reactions. Then we were shown exactly how to operate and administer the Epi-pen to someone who is experiencing an anaphylactic reaction. This was extremely helpful, because it gave us an opportunity to know exactly what to do, and not to be afraid of using it incorrectly. We now understand the urgency of the Epi-pen and that is very calming when we are prepared.
Being prepared is exactly what Sheila was when she finally got the courage up to travel. After many years of no travel because of her severe seafood allergy, armed with all the questions and getting all the correct responses her trip to the All-inclusive Resort of Azul The Fives Mayan Riviera Karisma Hotels, was made possible and she had a fantastic experience for her first international vacation.

Traveling with food allergies can be tricky, and this shouldn't mean that you stay away from travel. It just means that you may need to take a bit more time in planning for your trip in advance to make sure that your trip is safe.

Keep your medications (Epi-pen) with you, and carry a Dr's note that states the necessity of these medications. * IMPORTANT - show epinephrine visually to the Custom Officer, since the effects of X-Ray machines are not known.*
Check to see if the restaurant you will be visiting caters to food allergies, and if they cook certain foods separately.
Carry an Allergy Alert Card - This explains to your server and to the chef what exactly you have allergies to, so they can advise you correctly with the precautions that have or have not taken.
Write out an emergency plan in case you do suffer from an allergic response. This will alert others as to what to do and decrease the panic that may ensue.

Taking these necessary precautions, will Decrease the PANIC, Increase the RESPONSE time, thereby SAVING A LIFE.
