Different Manners Around The World
DIFFERENT MANNERS AROUND THE WORLD - We all have our customs and we have our own little rituals, sometimes in our communities and some are developed within our own families. So when you are traveling, you should be mindful of the manners that are traditional and unique to that particular culture.
For instance, in North America it would be impolite to burp out loud at the dinner table. But in many of the eastern cultures like Turkey and Saudi Arabia, for example, it is a welcomed sign, to the chef or hostess, that you enjoyed your meal and have had enough.
The Middle Eastern cultures are extremely offended if you extend your left hand to shake. Now for western cultures we often shake hands using our right hands anyways. However if we were to offer our left hand we would not necessarily be too concerned. In these countries it is known practice to eat with your right hand and to use your left in the bathroom. Therefore the left hand is considered dirty, even if it is clean.
Tipping is almost considered a MUST in North American culture. That's because the employer does not pay the employee a decent wage, so in the hospitality industry, the workers, rely heavily on tips to compensate their salaries. However in Britain, France and many of the European countries, the employees salaries are not based on tips, and therefore you don't have to tip and it is not expected. But in Japan, it is considered an insult to tip an employee. It is sending the wrong message to them, like they are in need and you are giving them some kind of hand out.
Therefore DO NOT TIP in Japan!
How many times have we been told by our parents/elders not to make noises when we eat. Chew with your mouth closed and don't slurp your liquids. Well in China, slurping is a definite sign that you are enjoying your meal and you are complimenting the chef the louder you slurp.
Yes manners are different throughout the world and it would be a very good practice to know what they are before you set off, so you are prepared and give them the best compliment, as a guest in their home.
