HOW TO PREVENT EAR PAIN DURING FLIGHT LANDING - Painful ears during take off and landing can be excruciating, so you would want to try anything to avoid this from happening.
You probably have heard the term of "ears popping." This is actually a good thing, because this is letting you know that your inner ear is making the necessary adjustments to equalize the pressure. It's when your ears don't pop that the discomfort starts to set in. As the plane climbs higher faster than your ears can adjust, the pressure in your ear starts to build up and now you have air and fluid pressing on the ear drum. This can also occur when, if the plane starts to descend to quickly, not allowing the ear pressure time to correct itself.
In order to prevent ear pain from happening to you, here are some simple actions you can do during your flight.
1. Drink fluids - will help to keep the Eustachian tube open and also reduces mucous build up.
2. Chew gum - this will keep the ear canal moving and will cause you to swallow more often.
3. Open ear canals by yawning - this helps to equalize the pressure, and reduce build up.
4. Take a decongestant about 30 minutes before your flight, especially if you are suffering from a cold or allergies.
5. Stay awake and alert so that you can initiate what you need to do, to reduce the pressure.
6. Wear ear plugs that are specific for reducing the ear pressure and equalizing the air in your inner ear.
For children this can be a little more challenging depending on the age of the child. Remember children's Eustachian tubes are smaller and narrower, so they have an increased chance of ear pressure and discomfort during take off and landing. Apply the same practices as you would with an adult, and consider giving Tylenol/Analgesic before the flight to help reduce the chance of ear pain. If you are traveling with a baby then the easiest thing to do, would be give a bottle/breast feed during take off and landing, and maybe a soother at anytime during the flight to increase comfort levels.
For those individuals who are susceptible to wax build up, which could increase the chances of ear pain, consider having your ears flushed prior to your flight. This will help to clear up any wax build up and remove the pressure from the ear drum.
Ear pressure can be excruciating, and can cause the ear drum to rupture and bleed, causing even grown men to cry out in pain. Take the necessary steps to reduce your chances of causing any type of ear pain during your next flight.
