Prof. Giuliano Amato, OMRI (Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana – the most senior Italian order of merit), Prime Minister of Italy (1992-93; 2000-01), Minister of the Interior (2006-08), President of the Constitutional Court of Italy (2022), President of the Italian antitrust authority AGCM (1994-97), Vice President of the Convention on the Future of Europe, President of Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies...
Giuliano Amato is an extraordinary figure in global competition law and policy community. Combining deep technical expertise in the discipline with the global agenda-setting policymaking experience, he offers deep philosophical account to the processes underpinning, navigating and explaining the evolution of European Union and EU Competition Law.
In this conversation we discussed in detail the past and the future of European markets, the role of the public in shaping competition, the relationship between competition and other legitimate societal values, the metamorphoses brought by the digital economy – and many other topics.
In addition to well-known regalia, Professor Amato is also a remarkable teacher of competition law & policy. Generations of EU competition lawyers and academics had a privilege to be taught by Professor Amato, and we all are very grateful to him for nurturing and maturing our interest in this (most?) amazing area of knowledge.
His seminal "Antitrust and the bounds of power : the dilemma of liberal democracy in the history of the market" was published in 1996. To celebrate this impactful work and to discuss its key themes in repercussion to the challenges of 2020s, a new volume "Antitrust and the Bounds of Power – 25 Years On" was published by Hart Publishing in 2023: https://www.bloomsbury.com/uk/antitru...

The Digital Markets Research Hub is an independent academic initiative aiming at scrutinising the functioning of competition/regulation in digital markets. We host one-to-one interviews with leading policymakers, regulators and practitioners. We also organise online mini-workshops inviting high-profile experts and academics in various fields of digital competition law & policy to discuss the most vibrant issues of the ongoing regulatory reforms in digital markets.
While having our clear normative stand on the matters discussed within the hub, we value different views and invite relevant stakeholders and thinkers representing the whole spectrum of reasonable positions on how to regulate competition in digital markets.
All our materials are available at YouTube channel, which you of course are very welcome to subscribe to.
