Shunt dc motor electrical model and its torque speed characteristics are explained in this lecture. This also includes the separately excited dc motor which is, in fact, a special case of a shunt motor. The lecture also include the methods to control the speed of dc shunt motor. The speed control through field resistance, armature resistance and armature voltage are expounded here as well. It is shown that the most feasible method of speed control is through armature voltage and field resistance. It is also explained that one of these speed control method is good for constant torque applications and one is excellent for constant power application. Further to this, it is explained that for armature resistance control method, the no-load speed remains same irrespective of the value of the resistance. The timeline of this lecture is as follows
