The original model, released in 1968 and the design code for this watch, was a groundbreaking model featuring a 10-beat high-beat movement—the world's highest standard at the time—housed in a one-piece, caseback-less, 300m-waterproof case. Made for diver's watches, the Caliber 8L is a high-quality mechanical movement that embodies Seiko's accumulated mechanical watch manufacturing technology and uncompromising craftsmanship, inherited through the artisanal techniques.
Accuracy control to minimize the effects of temperature
To maintain consistent accuracy, the condition of the balance, a critical component that determines a watch's accuracy, is crucial.
The balance is broadly composed of a balance wheel and a hairspring.
Made of metal, the balance wheel contracts and expands slightly with temperature changes, affecting accuracy.
The Caliber 8L has four support pillars, instead of the usual two or three, to prevent deformation due to temperature and minimize the impact of temperature on accuracy.
To ensure stable rotation, wheel balance is checked to within 0.000001g, and our engineers repeatedly check and correct the balance, ensuring thorough precision control. The hairspring is made of sprong, which is engineered to change the spring's characteristics to offset temperature-related contraction and expansion.
Achieving Long Power:
If there is significant transmission loss when power is transmitted to the gears, power cannot be maintained for long periods of time.
Each gear, crafted with exquisite precision using reliable machining techniques, is then meticulously polished to minimize friction between the gears, efficiently transmitting power.
