Yes, it could be done today, but not back then when the best special effects were still obviously special effects when seen today, like the 2001 film which was one of the best. Just enjoy the splendour of this desolate moon, wonder at the mountains and the close horizon, the danger the astronauts faced, the risk of being marooned, their amazing bravery which the moon conspiracy nutters devalue utterly.
