Timelapse Snow over Portsmouth (Revised)
On 1st March 2018 a snow storm that the press nicknamed “Beast from the East” arrived. It brought chaos to many areas as it was accompanied by strong winds too. This looking over Portsmouth from the top of Portsdown Hill, this time-lapse video captures the storm as it arrives and deposits some snow. It then continues as the snow clears and ‘normality’ resumes.
This is a slightly enhanced version of the first version I uploaded here: • Timelapse Snow over Portsmouth . I make no apologies as I've had a chance to play a little with the video editing software since I uploaded the original, whih I wanted to upload promptly due to the nature of the material.
For technical reasons, this version should be a little clearer. I've improved the colours and contrast levels in some places, particularly from dusk to dawn and altered some of the transitions used with the titles. Since I've also had a little extra time to play with the new version of the video editing software I use I have altered the copyright notice at the end a little too.
In the distance, you may be able to see Portsmouth Harbour to your right and the lights of the ships moving at night on the Solent. Often you can also the towns on the Isle of Wight and even the TV mast at Rowridge, however with the cloud cover and damp air these aren’t so easy to see during this video.
It is possible to see the moon and Jupiter in the night sky when the clouds clear. When there is cloud cover, the lights of Portsmouth reflect back, making it quite light.
There is a great deal happening in this video. Every time I've watched this video during the editing stage and once it's been rendered, I've spotted something new. Of the vehicles passing, there are many lorries. I've also spotted a tractor, ambulance or two, Smart Car, cyclists and motorcyclists and a few unusual vehicles too. Quite a few people have walked past too.
There are plenty of crows and a couple of seagulls. I haven't spotted any foxes but I do know that they are in the area. I suspect that they aren't brave enough to venture into the area close to where the camera was located.
The source video took one image every 5 seconds and recorded 25 fps. I had intended to pick it at the end of Thursday, but events conspired against this happening. I've sped it up to 10x the original playback speed. This means that if you play it back at the rendered 50fps you are seeing images that were recorded at around 25 seconds apart.
