Education Secretary Patrick Tutwiler, Higher Education Commissioner Noe Ortega, and Acting Elementary and Secondary Education Commissioner Russell Johnston will be joined by the Healey-Driscoll Administration’s Advisory Council for the Advancement of Representation in Education to announce action the administration will be taking to ensure Massachusetts continues to prioritize equity and access to higher education, particularly for historically unrepresented students.
The Council was formed ahead of the Supreme Court’s decision last year that limited the ability of higher education institutions to consider an applicant’s race in and of itself as a factor in deciding whether to admit the applicant. Since the ruling, some Massachusetts universities have reported a decrease in enrollment of students of color.
