Dr Citrome shares his insights on the efficacy and tolerability of lumateperone to treat schizophrenia as measured by number-needed-to-treat and number-needed-to-harm analyses. Pooling together data from three clinical trials, Dr Citrome explains that lumateperone, the newest second-generation antipsychotic, shows favorable tolerability with lower incidence of weight gain, akathisia, and somnolence/sedation compared with placebo and risperidone. With lower rates of motoric adverse events (eg, tardive dyskinesia) and no clinically relevant effects on metabolic variables, ECG QT interval, or prolactin levels, lumateperone is an efficacious and unique treatment for schizophrenia.
