The Common or True Red-Footed Bolete (Xerocomellus chrysenteron)
The Red-Footed Bolete (Xerocomellus chrysenteron) is an edible mushroom in the bolete family. It grows primarily in deciduous and mixed forests and prefers acidic, nutrient-poor soils. The fruiting bodies usually appear from June to October. The cap is up to 10 cm wide, initially hemispherical, later becoming domed or flat. The surface is matte, often cracked, and has reddish-brown to olive-brown tones. The fine, reddish cracks in the cap skin, through which the underlying yellowish flesh becomes visible, are characteristic. The tubes are initially yellow, later olive-yellow. The stem is often tinged with red, slender, and sometimes curved. The odor is faint, the flavor mild.
The Red-Footed Bolete is edible but is rarely valued due to its soft flesh in old specimens and its rapid deterioration. It's also possible to mistake them for inedible species.
However, if you focus on young red-footed boletes with their bright yellow tubes, you'll have an excellent edible mushroom.
