JOHN MCCAIN: I can tell you what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna do the hard part and I'm gonna do the hard things. I wanna talk to you just for a minute about the economy.
I think you all know the economy is [...] going through some shaky times here because of the subprime-lending crisis and I have great and strong faith in the fundamental underpinnings of the economy of the United States of America, but I wanna tell ya that we may be going through a tough period. We've got to make sure that we lower peoples' taxes. There's a thing called the alternate minimum tax, which is facing 20 million Americans. We've got to eliminate that.
We can't force what was once designed to be applied to a few millionaires to harm the ability of [...] 20 million Americans to keep their savings and their earnings. We're gonna have to make tax cuts permanent. We do not need a tax increase for Americans today at this particular time.
