Nicolas Barthelmé is a business graduate and worked for many years in sales and marketing for brand-name food manufacturers. At the end of 2018, he discovered the idea behind the French consumer movement "C'est qui le patron?!" (Who's the boss?!), was immediately enthusiastic, and decided to bring this spirit of co-determination to Germany. In June 2019, he and eight other consumers founded the initiative "Du bist hier der Chef! Die Verbrauchermarke" (You're the boss here! The consumer brand), which aims to create transparency regarding the quality and price of food and guarantee fair compensation for farmers. With "Du bist hier der Chef!", consumers decide for themselves what is important to them in food, how it should be produced, and determine the corresponding fair price.
In 2020, Nicolas won the Hessian Founders' Award in the category of Social Impact. The initiative's first product—the democratically elected consumer milk, which has been available in select supermarkets for two and a half years—received the Fairness Award in 2021.
