The arrival of the FIA GT Championship and the GT1 category, with only one (1) road-legal unit, led to the arrival of truly beautiful and fast machines. Lotus wanted to jump on the bandwagon with the spectacular Lotus Elise GT1, a variant of its innovative sports car. Unfortunately, lack of time and budget worked against both the English and private teams.
