The two most ubiquitous messaging platforms on the planet, both WhatsApp and iMessage repeatedly reference their use of End-to-End Encryption as a security silver bullet. But not all is as it seems in their walled gardens — encryption alone is not enough, unless it is properly implemented and verifiable. Troubling too, is their use of private chat backups, which means every conversation is only as safe as the password used to protect them.
