Man with a Movie Camera is a 1929 Soviet experimental silent documentary film, written and directed by Dziga Vertov. It was filmed by his brother Mikhail Kaufman (who also appears as the titular cameraman) and edited by Vertov’s wife Yelizaveta Svilova.
Produced by the All-Ukrainian Photo Cinema Administration (VUFKU), Vertov’s feature film presents urban life in Moscow, Kiev, and Odessa during the late 1920s. The film uses no actors, instead portraying Soviet citizens from dawn to dusk—at work, at play, and interacting with the machinery of modern life.
Rather than traditional characters, the film’s central figures are the cameraman, the film editor, and the modern Soviet Union itself.
Man With a Movie Camera is famous for its groundbreaking cinematic techniques, many of which Vertov invented, employed, or developed, including:

Although the film was largely dismissed upon its initial release for its rapid editing, self-reflexivity, and emphasis on form over narrative content, its reputation has grown dramatically over time.
In the British Film Institute’s Sight & Sound poll, critics ranked it the 8th greatest film of all time in 2012, the 9th greatest in 2022, and in 2014 it was named the greatest documentary ever made.
In 2021, the National Oleksandr Dovzhenko Film Centre placed it #3 on the list of the 100 greatest films in Ukrainian cinema history.
