Have you ever wondered how human-made pearls are created inside an oyster? I mean, while most people think all pearls are natural, the reality is that natural pearls are extremely rare. In fact, around 95-99% of the pearls you see today are made with a bit of human intervention—these are called cultured pearls. The process starts by inserting a small piece of foreign material, like a bead or shell, into the oyster. This triggers the oyster's natural defense mechanism and it coats the material with a hard shiny substance called nacre to protect itself. Over time, layers of nacre build up, eventually forming a beautiful pearl.
