Today we’re in the field exploring the seaweeds that live in the rocky intertidal zone. Above the high tide mark in tidepools and high in the interidal zone live many different species of the green algae Ulva. Ulva is able to survive in the low salinity, high temperature, and high nutrient conditions of the high intertidal zone. Ulva also like really high levels of sunlight. The bulk of the intertidal zone is dominated by different species of brown seaweed. These seaweeds attach to the substrate with their holdfasts and are referred to as rockweeds. Many common species of rockweed are found in the genus Fucus, which are quick growing and smaller than other rockweeds. Ascophyllum nodosum is another common rockweed species. It is much longer lived and slower growing compared to the Fucus species, because of this it will eventually dominant areas it is present. Lower in the intertidal zone or outside the tidal zone is where you are more likely to find species of red algae, such as Chondrus crispus.
