Photoionization, the Saha Equation, and Recombination
The Saha equation describes ionization in local thermal equilibrium. We derive it here using Boltzmann statistics and carefully counting degenerate states and show how it implies a much lower temperature for recombination in the early universe than you might otherwise expect.
