KAMAZ-54901 goes driverless | News on the Move
Driverless KamAZ trucks have been launched on the M-11 Neva highway, which connects Moscow and St. Petersburg. Several working prototypes will be transporting real commercial cargo: this is the first completed stage of the "Driverless Logistics Corridors" project. According to calculations by the logistics company PEK, the introduction of driverless trucks will increase cargo delivery speed by 12%, as autonomous trucks will make more regular trips than regular vehicles. Furthermore, the cost of transportation will be reduced by 10% due to the continuous operation of road trains, as well as savings on driver salaries. Vitaly Saveliev: “We are starting today with three KAMAZ trucks, and three more will be added at the beginning of July: thus, there will be six KAMAZ trucks this year. And starting next year, another twelve KAMAZ trucks will be added.” The experimental vehicles are based on the mainline model 54901. They are equipped with communication, navigation, technical vision and incoming information processing systems. The trucks will operate on a 650-kilometer shoulder between the logistics terminals of the two capitals, without entering the cities themselves. Andrey Belousov: “From the very beginning, we worked out the attractiveness of the business model, the financial model for investors, for shippers. And today, shippers who have taken the risk of placing their commercial cargo in these beautiful vehicles are also taking part in this event.” In the future, the vehicles will be able to operate in a round-the-clock mode of transportation, since they will not require a driver. However, now, during the test period, KAMAZ engineers are in the truck cabins: their task is to monitor the operation of the electronics for sudden errors. Andrey Belousov: “You have to understand that the main part of this work remains invisible. Because it’s not just about these vehicles. The fact is that this is part of a single “vehicle - road” system. This is a single digital space, this is a single digital platform. And the vehicle constantly interacts with a digital twin of the road." In addition to KAMAZ, the experiment also involved logistics companies Globaltruck, PEK, Gazpromneft-Snabzhenie, and several others. The results of the first stage will help clarify plans for the project's further development, as well as formulate a production schedule for the driverless trucks.
