NHM Presents: A Panel Discussion on the Hagia Sophia
The National Hellenic Museum presents a panel discussion on the Hagia Sophia. Panelists Dr. Phil Dorroll, Inga Leonova, Dcn. David-John Williams, and the NHM's resident scholar Dr. Katherine Kelaidis discuss the history and significance of the Hagia Sophia. The panel was recorded on July 29, 2020 and is moderated by NHM's Manager of Special Events, Cairo Dye.
Panelists:
Phil Dorroll holds a PhD in Religion from Emory University in Atlanta. He is associate professor of religion at Wofford College in Spartanburg SC and an Orthodox Christian. His work focuses on Sunni Islamic theology in classical Arabic and modern Turkish, and the history of interactions between Orthodox Christianity and Islam.
Inga Leonova is Editor-in-Chief of the Wheel Journal and is a practicing architect, writer and educator. She taught a course on Monotheism, Culture, and Sacred Space at the Boston Architectural College, and serves as a thesis advisor at the New England School of Art and Design. She is the author of several publications on Orthodoxy and cultural issues, including liturgical architecture and ecology.
Dcn. David-John is a post graduate researcher in the department of history at Royal Holloway University of London where he is exploring shared sacred spaces in the Byzantine Mediterranean, since 2016 he has taught as assistant professor of history at the University of Saint Katherine in San Diego California. He has served the Serbian Orthodox Diocese of Western America as a Deacon since 2014. A Byzantinist by training Dcn. David-John is especially interested the reconstruction of the sacred in the various religious traditions of the Mediterranean.
Katherine Kelaidis is Resident Scholar at the National Hellenic Museum in Chicago. She is also a regular contributor at Religion Dispatches and Public Orthodoxy. She holds a PhD in Classics from the University of London and BA in Classical Languages from the University of California at Berkeley.
