What does modernist architecture have to do with the Parthenon, a classical Greek Temple?
On Thursday, May 19th 2022 the National Hellenic Museum hosted a panel discussion in collaboration with the Mies van der Rohe Society at the Illinois Institute of Technology. The program explored the blend of classical influences and constructivist form in Mies van der Rohe’s architecture, with a special focus on how he folded the two together at the Illinois Institute of Technology, which houses the largest collection of his buildings.
Mies, one of the most influential architects of Modernism, immigrated to Chicago from Germany and pioneered the architectural style characterized by pure structural form, glass, and steel. His influence on the built environment can be seen in Chicago, around the world, and in the work of subsequent generations of architects. His life demonstrates the impact immigrants have on their adopted homelands.
