Sign-singing video - I Just Want a Simple Life
I made this video of me signing along to a song I wrote myself, I Just Want a Simple Life.
As you may know, I have been learning to write music and this is an example of a piece I have created. Because I am Deaf, most music doesn't sound too good to me - it becomes a blare of white noise. I discovered that that's because I can hear some notes but not others, so it sounds like the music stops and starts. Also when multiple instruments are playing at once, my hearing aids can't handle them. On top of that, I hear low sounds better than high sounds, which means that the bass usually overpowers the voice for me. When I create a song for myself, I can adjust the levels so that the voice is loud enough for me to hear, select only notes that I can hear, and ensure there's not too much happening at once. Simple music with few instruments is what works best for me, and this is an example of that. It also doesn't have any commercial polishing done - mixing and programming is usually done to make a song sound better before it's published, but this can make a song sound less distinct to me. If this piece sounds a bit weird to you, that's probably why! To me, however, it sounds great, and I really enjoy signing along!
