THE CARNIVAL FROM HELL || CarnEvil || Arcade Appreciation #9 (Arcade/MAME)
Today I've got something super awesome in store for y'all. One of my all-time favorite light gun arcade games, Midway's CarnEvil! Now if you've never seen this one before...mwahaha! Strap in friends, it's going to be one heck of a ride through the dark and twisted world of CarnEvil! While it never rose to the same levels of fame as Sega's House of the Dead or Namco's Time Crisis, it's a cult classic that has a surprisingly dedicated following. I mean, check out Greely Valley Cemetery sometime. It's a fansite someone put together that pulls EVERYTHING that they're able to in order to make the best CarnEvil fansite ever. It's really great.
The game itself is your typical on-rails shooter flow, with the player going through three main stages: The Freakshow, Rickety Town, and The Haunted House. Only when all three have been defeated can you gain access to The Big Top, where your showdown with the demented ruler of CarnEvil, Ludwig Von Tokkentakker, awaits.
Another super-cool-awesome aspect of this game was its gun, which was a lightgun shotgun. So instead of having to point off the side of the screen and shoot you simply pumped the gun and boom! Blasting continues. And trust me, you'll need the second or two the pump saves.
Unfortunately, something REALLY odd happened to the sound after the Haunted House stage. I don't think it's the video itself, as my voice still sounds fine. Eh, must've been some odd error with MAME. Such is life.
