Indexed universal life insurance addresses a different set of problems than the income-focused retirement planning most military retirees encounter. This video introduces the War Chest Strategy, the IUL approach career officers and senior NCOs use to build a protection and tax-free access layer alongside the military pension and TSP.

The framework covers three functions: offense (growth and tax-free access), defense (death benefit and pension protection), and contingency (liquidity). Where the military pension and TSP handle income, the War Chest Strategy handles what income alone does not cover: the survivor protection gap, the cash value access question, and the wealth leverage piece most standard retirement plans skip for military retirees. The SBP alternative question sits inside the defense function: when IUL is structured appropriately, it can address the survivor protection gap that SBP covers, while also providing cash value access, tax treatment, and wealth leverage that SBP does not offer.

The War Chest Strategy Guide in the War Chest Library covers this framework in detail by rank.
