Most of the content around SBP focuses on why retirees decline it. This video makes the opposite argument: when is SBP the right choice, and what actually makes it the right one?
Two scenarios tend to apply. The first is a serious medical condition where private-market qualification isn't realistic at current rates. That doesn't mean the SBP is permanent: the 24-to-36-month opt-out window after retirement provides a second look if health improves or alternative underwriting becomes viable. The second scenario is a significant age gap between the retiree and spouse. If your spouse is 10 to 20 years younger, the probability side of the SBP calculation shifts. Even in that case, it's worth noting that SBP pays 55% of the military pension, is taxable, and pays monthly only. For most spouses in that scenario, a monthly benefit equal to roughly half the pension isn't the full picture of what they'd need. Supplementing SBP with additional coverage addresses that, and it's possible to structure the supplemental piece offensively so it generates value while both of you are still alive.
The SBP Decision Guides in the War Chest Library walk through both of these scenarios by rank.
