Perhaps, if it really is a deal breaker, try complementing him and making him feel good, something that inspires him to make that change of his own free will on his own, You will soon know if it's a step too far.

Do not forgive every time, pick your Red lines and defend them when crossed;
Do not spend all your time with your partner,
Do not stop looking after yourself, you are what attracted your partner in the first place;
Do not lose your identity, the last point should emphasis this;
Do not be financially dependent on your partner, this will lead to a marginalized place in your relationship together. One, it is hard to break free from and be yourself. Free to be the one that attracted him in the first place, again.
For balance - Men make similar mistakes - Partners make similar mistakes no mater the mix of the relationship.
If we are perfect, we would not see the flaws in others, however, none of us are perfect and as such the flaws in others often appear after we have made commitments which are hard to undue.
