St. John's wort has been used as a medicine since ancient Greece to treat various ailments, including various nervous disorders. There is strong scientific evidence that it is effective in treating mild to moderate depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, and other mental health problems. According to some studies, the supplement is as effective as several antidepressant prescriptions for a short period of time. Furthermore, St. John's wort appears to have antibacterial and antiviral properties, which benefit our body's defense. Two of its many active ingredients that are thought to affect our mood are hypericin and hyperforin. Hyperforin, a component of St. John's wort, interacts with brain chemicals that can affect a person's mood to treat mild depression.
