The END of scale pattern boxes
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Like most people, I started soloing by memorizing scale pattern boxes. And I’m grateful for that, it’s better than nothing. But, with the danger of poking a sacred cow, I MUST say that they are NOT an effective learning system.
And I suspect that most of you have been frustrated many times trying to learn this way. You stay stuck in a box, you have trouble moving to another one, you don’t know how to make music with these notes, and so on.
When I went to Berklee in 1997 I realized that people who play other instruments actually know what they are doing. They are aware of the actual notes they play. This is almost impossible on the guitar because visually it’s more complex than most instruments.
A guitar fretboard is like having 6 different piano keyboards side by side, and the black keys are at different places on each one!
That’s why we DO need a visual system. But, instead of just memorizing boxes, we need a system that helps us understand the fretboard and facilitates play creatively.
So let’s say you want to learn the G Minor scale (aka G Aeolian) on the guitar fretboard. How can you do it without memorizing boxes?
Well, check this video out. It will blow your mind. You are about to have a lightbulb moment!
