Layering Transparent and Opaque Acrylic Paints - Working with Complimentary Colors
Avoid scraped canvases and muddy results in your acrylic pour paintings by understanding transparent and opaque paints. Getting great results has a lot to do with the order in which you layer your paints.
The opacity, or hiding strength, basically has to do with how the paint color interacts with light.
OPAQUE paints are more reflective - not necessarily shiny - but they will reflect the color instead of allowing the light to pass through. In other words, opaque paints will color and hide whatever is beneath it, either the canvas or other colors of paint.
TRANSPARENT paints, also known as translucent paints, allow more light to pass through them so you can see what is underneath. The greater the transparency of a paint, the more you will be able to see through it.
So what does that have to do with complimentary colors? Everything! If you've been an artist for any length of time, you probably figured out that combining complimentary colors will give you brownish or grayish results. So if you layer two complimentary colors on top of one another and the one on top is transparent, you can probably guess that you are going to get muddy results because the light is going to reflect off the color beneath it, passing through the transparent color and changing the color your eyes see.
