When the reelected president Marc Jarry (Gabriel Cattand) is assassinated by a sniper, there are investigations and one year later, a thick report is produced. The authorities approve the document except the prosecutor Henri Volney (Yves Montand), who does not agree with the conclusion of the document. Together with a small team of investigators, they carry out their own investigation and learn many hidden dirty secrets about the witnesses and the investigation. In the course of his search Volney finds evidence that casts serious doubt on the committee's "lone-gunman" theory.
Director Henri Verneuil enjoyed a longstanding and very productive collaboration with the great Ennio Morricone; this was their sixth and final film together. It’s a solid and enjoyable thriller score with numerous colors to it, markedly different from the composer’s most famous entries in the French thriller genre. The opening theme, “La vérité et le soleil” (Truth and Sun), is a baroque piece full of melancholy, a little closer to some of Morricone’s Sicilian crime thrillers in sound. Sad but beautiful, it’s vintage Morricone, conveying a sort of resigned feeling that’s so apt. The final theme called alternately “Icare” or “I… comme Icare” is a grand, dramatic one full of dark portent which is weirdly delicious in its way.
