Jean Valjean (Jean Gabin), an ex-convict who was imprisoned for twenty years for stealing a piece of bread, becomes an exemplary man who fights against misery and injustice and who commits his life to caring for Cosette (Béatrice Altariba), the daughter of Fantine (Danièle Delorme), a woman who had to become a prostitute. To save the girl, Valjean is forced to change his name several times, is captured, escapes and reappears. At the same time, he must elude Commissioner Javert (Bernard Blier), an inflexible police officer who pursues him convinced that he has unfinished business with justice.

Georges van Parys was a film, operetta and light music french composers. At the age of 16 he discovered Maurice Ravel and Debussy, musicians who were a source of inspiration throughout his career. In 1930 he met René Clair, at a time when talkies were beginning. René Clair counted on him to work on the first French musical sound film, Le Million. Considered a precursor of film music, throughout his career, van Parys composed more than three hundred film scores, some of them becoming classics of French cinema. This lyrical and dramatic soundtrack has a very beautiful main theme that exalts the desire for freedom.
