Swami Sivananda | Beyond Maha-Samadhi and Miracles | Documentary
On the 8th of September 1887, in a place called Pattamadai, ten miles away from Tinnevelly Junction (in Tamil Nadu), at sunrise, a child was born to Srimati Parvati Ammal and P.S. Vengu Iyer, as their third son. He was given the name Kuppuswamy.
Born in a traditional Brahmin family of devotees and philosophers, he received excellent training in the Vedas and Upanishads and taught strong values of virtue and devotion to god. He grew up to be a bold yet good-mannered active boy with a highly pushing nature.
He was a bright student and took up medicine as a career choice after completing his degree at Tanjore Medical Institute. He topped his class in all the subjects and was admired by all his professors.
He started a medical journal called ‘Ambrosia’, which became widespread among medical practitioners. Unlike other journals, the outlook of Ambrosia was based on the ancient teachings of the saints. One could find a significant touch of spirituality in the journal.
After taking up a job in one of the pharmacies in Madras, he felt the need for a better position and therefore decided to try his luck in the straits settlements of Malaya.
To land in Malaya, without any prior assurance of a job, withstanding the strong resistance from his orthodox Brahmin family for traveling over the seas, and a little reserve of money, was the testimony of his fiery determination and willpower. He believed in himself and took the plunge to test his destiny.
After some struggles, he found a job to handle the hospital of a rubber estate. In the hospital, he came in direct contact with hundreds of poor natives and bonded laborers. The ailing and terrible conditions of the workers ignited compassionate service towards mankind within him. He served and took care of them with utmost dedication. He never demanded anything from his patients but shared whatever he had. He even pawned some of his personal belongings to help some patients in need.
He used to cheer up people with his wit and humor and elevate the sick with loving and encouraging words. The sick persons felt a new health, spirit, and hope in his presence. Everywhere people declared that he had a special gift from God for the miraculous cure.
