My strategy was.... (Spoiler-Alert!):
I used mostly upgraded Nut Cannons, Nut Snails and later Laser Chunks.
No poison, splash or freeze-towers at all. I always tried to expand the trunk to the maximum size and leveled it up when the HP was lowest.
