Javier Perez: So now I’ll show you some quick charts about the most popular and the most used open source technologies. We'll go by category starting with kind of infrastructure: the top infrastructure tools and Linux distributions. CentOS is end of life, so usage went down, but you can see that there's a large variety of other technologies. And on the infrastructure side, I mean, there's so many more.Cloud-native technologies is obviously an important category with a ton of projects. I'm actually not familiar with all of them. I don't know if you know all of them, Stef (laughs) but you can see, they keep growing. And only Open Stack declined from last year. All the others definitely grew. I did check, and Open Stack is still heavily used in the telecom industry and a few other industries, that hasn't changed. Some of you might be surprised by some of the names here, or maybe they're not new to you.For programming languages: JavaScript, Python, node.js, Java — no surprises there, right? And you can see on the table there how it breaks out by the size of the organization: still JavaScript, Python, and node.js are the most popular.
Stefano Maffulli: Yeah, it's nice to see the different Javas, and the breakdown.
Javier Perez: We also show runtimes. There’s OpenJDK, OpenJ9, we included those as well. Oops, there's a mistake; I'm sorry, it should say C Sharp, not C plus after Go.
For frameworks, JavaScript frameworks and Java frameworks both lead the way for sure. And .Net is heavily used. And then things like TensorFlow and PyTorch are there, which means that people are working on AI.
Stefano Maffulli: I noticed that.
Javier Perez: I think I thought PyTorch was a bit more used than TensorFlow, but these are the numbers from our respondents. I'm a good friend of one of the initial contributors, one of the original writers of Laminas, and he was very happy to see Laminas there. That's a PHP framework.
And then we have open source data technologies. The takeaway for me is that there are so many and they're become so common. Long gone are the days when you had to go with a traditional relational database (laughs).
Stefano Maffulli: Interesting to see here, OpenSearch and ElasticSearch, and the distance between the two.
Javier Perez: Sure, sure. For people that are not familiar, OpenSearch is the fork from ElasticSearch after they changed their open source license, right?
Stefano Maffulli: Right. Technically they're not open source anymore. Like Mongo.
Javier Perez: Exactly. And, people might remember the restriction that they put on their license for hosting. Which technically is limiting usage.
Stefano Maffulli: Yeah. Limiting usage and forcing people to ask for permission, which is exactly counter to the principles of open source.
Javier Perez: Are they requesting permissions?
Stefano Maffulli: Yes, before you can use it, you have to ask permission, like, “Hey, I'm gonna use it for this specific use. Is this something you allow or not?”
Javier Perez: I didn't know that. Well, we had to include them as part of the ecosystem, but obviously we go with OSI’s guidance in terms of the proper definition of open source software.
