This video is from the webinar, “The 2023 State of Open Source Report: Key Findings and Analysis” that took place on February 16, 2023. It features Javier Perez (Chief OSS Evangelist and Senior Director of Product Management, Perforce Software) and Stefano Maffulli (Executive Director, Open Source Initiative) discussing the most interesting findings from this year’s State of Open Source report — and what the results tell us about the future of open source software.

Transcript (lightly edited for clarity):

Javier Perez: Here's an interesting question. We asked -- and this was a new question on the survey this year -- what is the most business-critical open source software in your organization? What you see on the slide here with the logos are some examples of the ones that were mentioned. It's just kind of easy to show it as a stack. What you see in the purple boxes on the side are the top eight technologies that respondents told us were the most business-critical. As in, if something happens to them, they're in trouble (laughs). And I was very interested to see that, for example, PHP is one of them. I mean, there are ton of web apps on PHP like WordPress, which also made this list, for content management. It's basically all based on PHP. So that was an interesting finding.

Stefano Maffulli: Indeed. I mean, WordPress is the unsung hero in my opinion. It's a project that has been doing all sorts of very interesting, innovative things from the get-go. And now they have also created a sustainable business that is just impressive. The company behind WordPress, Automattic, is also not celebrated enough, in my opinion. They've been doing some very amazing innovation on the business model front, creating a wide community and just widening the pie for small organizations to take a chunk of the revenue from something that is completely free.

Javier Perez: Yeah. Yeah. So there's much more than what you see on the screen, but these technologies happened to be the ones that were mentioned the most. Of course, every organization has its critical software infrastructure, and for the most part, if not the vast majority, it's all open source technologies.
