Book review: Thirty Pieces of Silver is beautifully crafted by the brilliant author Ruth Parry (known for the Divine Timing Series). It's first person perspective puts you right back into the 1940's through the eyes of Septimus Plant. The young constable who's got an awful lot more to him than first meets the eye. You are in the driving seat, trying to solve the murder from your arm chair whilst you read this stunning page-turner. Surrounded by other interesting individuals who reside in the quaint Lowchester town. From Polly Pretty, Oddpenny, Richard Vaast, Mrs Swincoe, Ethel the love interest and Bob Horsham to many more. You will feel like you have been taken back in time and plonked into the village as you follow the trail of clues and red herrings. Despite its genre of 'whodunit' there are many comedy elements within to enjoy from puns, quips, funny predicaments and witty dialogue. And that's not to mention the romantic undertones dusted within its chapters.
I am one of the lucky few to know a little more than the average reader regarding this anthology so with every turn of the page, the more excitement grows inside. You will enjoy knowing not just the backstory behind the mysterious protagonist but the other enriching characters who potter their way around Lowchester and maybe have a swift pint in the famous Stout Badger.
I really love the attention to detail the author has gone into with regards to the front and back cover of the book with it's finger prints and old-timey newspaper style aesthetic. It is also reflected inside with the contextually accurate items, dialogue, history and feeling of the 1940's. I could easily see this being snapped up and adapted into a television series because it has all the ingredients for a prime time slot.
