The Secret Sauce Every Mechanical Player Needs

Positioning, ah yes, another Rocket League fundamental. It's simple and boring, but important for a reason, as a player's positioning controls their decision-making for mechanics and plays and may even affect their boost management as well. There are so many different ways to position in Rocket League, offense and defense, and then several types of ways to control them. Control ranges from picture-perfect ball control (I'm talking to you, Mr. Freestyler) to Boom and Chase control (I'm talking to you, Mr. Speed Demon) to demos and boost control, so pretty much off-the-ball control, everything in between plays. And there's no right way to do it either! Let alone anything in this game, as the game is incredibly situational. And as a player ranks up, they must be comfortable with a little bit of everything. The end goal (or at least how I view this game) is to be adaptable and willing to adjust. I learned this the hard way through my days coaching in the top 16 RLCS. Adjustments are the way; they're how teams counter and close out series. In today's video, I'm reviewing a Supersonic Legend player who's extremely control-focused. We got to see some freestyling in a 2k+ MMR lobby, but such is the current state of Rocket League. Since this player is super mechanical, I wanted to build on this, and I noticed early on that they were having a difficult time transitioning the ball down the field and creating offense. I dug a bit deeper and realized two things: They were hyper-focused on small boost pad rotations and midfield positioning and on picture-perfect ball control plays. Both are good when they work. However, sometimes things don't click, and you have to adjust. To start with the easy, I covered Boom and Chase with them, which is simply an alternative way to add impact on the ball. It's a playstyle adjustment rooted in hard-hitting ball touches (booms) with the sole goal of clearing defensive pressure, transitioning, and inducing panic. Booms create the panic, and then they're paired exceptionally well with follow-up 50/50s (the chase portion), demos, and boost control. It's an outpacing strategy and extremely easy to visualize and execute. Secondly, I discussed their midfield positioning, specifically them being too tight and close to the play. On paper, this is good, whether it's to play for a pass, a 50/50 pickup, or a shot. But the negatives (seen in this review) are that it often leads to a loss of momentum and poor play timing, which then affects shot, challenge, and ball control quality, and then potentially getting demoed as well (no fun!). I still wanted this player to position in the midfield, but I encouraged them to position a couple car lengths deeper and gave the midfield line on offense as a reference point. I wanted them to widen and extend rotations to a big boost and give themselves more speed and space to work with while also faking and shifting the direction of their ball control. Altogether, my main objective with both core pieces of advice, Boom and Chase and midfield positioning, was to help them diversify and highlight their playstyle. They're extremely mechanical, so the more boost, speed, and space to work with only emphasizes that, and then adopting some booms here or there will raise and add depth to their impact on the ball. If you do the same thing every time, especially at higher levels in the game, then eventually, you'll become readable. And for this player and their mechanical abilities, their goal is to become unreadable. I also think that goes for every other mechanical player. Have a great day, car ballers.
