What makes a fast Rocket League player fast? Well, speed is a funny thing in this game. It's a combination of car speed (hardcapped at supersonic), mechanics (think, car control and recovery), positioning, and how quick a decision is made. It's also not particular to a role in rotation, i.e., 1st man, 2nd man, and 3rd man. However, a 3rd-man role is typically played "slower," as their primary job is to be an anchor in their team's rotation and reduce risk. In today's video, I'm reviewing a player who ranks between Champion III and Grand Champion I. They primarily play a 1st-man role and love to play fast and aggressively regardless of their opponents. And in today's matchup, they're competing against a Grand Champion II team in a league called LOS Champs. On a long-term basis, I'm helping this player find moments to slow down and control the ball, as it'll balance out their playstyle. But I didn't discuss that today (even though it would've solved some of their problems) because it's overkill, meaning I've gone hard on them for the past couple of weeks. Instead, I wanted to build on their speed, and I did so through two simple ideas: intentional boom placement and drive challenges. Both are easy, but that's what car ball is all about. To start, I wanted them to essentially think before they hit, before they challenge or boom. A boom is defined (in my books) as a hard-hitting touch out of defense (supersonic trail) that travels past the midfield line, or in some cases, all the way to the opponent's goal line or backboard. Building on that, I wanted them to be more intentional with their boom placement, whether it's to a teammate, off the walls for rebounds, or to open space to play for 50/50s. Booms pair extremely well with boost control and demos, and altogether, they're an effective way to clear pressure and cause panic, as your opponents will be forced into a constant state of reaction. It's not good to boom everything, but a little bit of intention drastically raises the impact of a throwaway touch. And then with drive challenges, they're pretty easy as well. I'm all about easy if you can't tell! I've coached at the highest levels of Rocket League since 2020 (top 16 RLCS and college), and I even played the game at a "semi-high" level myself (former Rank BPLUS 6Mans player), and the simpler you make things, the better. A drive challenge is an intentional fake, but an aggressive one. Traditionally, a fake is when you peel off the play into shadow defense or any other defensive technique. But a drive challenge is an aggressive fake where you drive through your challenge, aka faking forward. And my objective was to provide this player with a substitute for their booms if they were out of position, so that they could remain aggressive and drive through the play instead of faking and slowing down. Drive challenges present many benefits too. They're a 1st-man thing, pair exceptionally well with demos, effectively force the play (it's hard to tell from an opponent's POV what you're doing), increase recovery speed, improve boost management (the less jumping and ball playing, the more boost you'll have), and overall instill confidence in a player because they're intentionally faking and in control of the play. There are several ways to solve problems in this game, and my approach with this player was to provide them with solutions that are friendly to their playstyle. They'll enjoy them, and that's the most important part about playing Rocket League. If you're not having fun, then you're not improving. Have a great day, car ballers.
