Victor Villarreal, flute d'amore
flute part arranged by Victor Villarreal
harp part arranged by Ray Pool
The flute d'amore (flute of love) is pitched in Ab, A, or Bb, and is very rare--the repertoire for it being even rarer! It has the qualities of an alto flute and a C flute combined, with a mellow, intimate tone that is veiled and haunting in the middle and upper registers. It’s seldom seen or heard, but the theme of this carol seems particularly appropriate.
What child is this who, laid to rest,
On Mary's lap is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet
While shepherd's watch are keeping?
This, this is Christ the King,
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing.
Haste! haste to bring him laud,
The babe, the son of Mary.
So bring him incense, gold and myrrh,
Come peasant, king, to own him;
The King of kings salvation brings,
Let loving heart enthrone Him.
Raise, raise a song on high!
The virgin sings her lullaby.
Joy, joy for Christ is born!
The babe, the son--
The Holy one--
The babe, the son of Mary.
