Dysmenorrhoea means periods that are painful and menorrhagia means periods that are too heavy. A normal period lasts 5-7 days, and women lose about 80mls of blood total. Blood can be dark brown, black, red or pinkish.

If you think your periods are too heavy or too painful, see your GP. There are lots of options for reducing the length and heaviness of periods. Your GP will check you for medical problems that can cause heavy and painful periods, and can suggest different options for making this better. Some options include things you take only when you have your periods – such as tranexamic acid and mefenamic acid, or more long term solutions, such as going on the pill or having an IUD. For women who don't wish to have any more children, having an endometrial ablation is an option. Take a look at the links below, and talk to your GP.
