Introducing Hayun Surl, 2024 NCECA Conference Presenter, Glaze Research - Virginia Sea Mud
This presentation will discuss the process of making glaze using collected sea mud samples during a research visit to Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, in 2019. It will explore how memory and experience with clay as a local material connect different places between the United States and South Korea. Surl will also address concerns about sustainability and the impact of sea-level rise on the habitat situation in Chesapeake Bay, Virginia.
Hayun Surl is an Assistant Professor of Ceramics at Angelo State University, Texas. He earned his MFA in Ceramics at Ohio University. Before coming to the US, Surl had a two-year apprenticeship learning Korean traditional pottery. His work is heavily inspired by his background as an interior designer.
