Oklahoma Riversports Rapids
I've had the great fortune to paddle many of the industrial whitewater centers in the US and in New Zealand. You'll find in my other videos scenes from the US National Whitewater Center in Charlotte, NC; The Montgomery Whitewater Park, AL; Great Falls, SC; Boise, ID; Bend, OR; and Vecto Wero in Aukland, NZ.
This video features my one visit to Riversports Rapids in Oklahoma City.
Though the staff was very welcoming to me, I found the whitewater channels unpleasantly difficult to run on my boards compared to other whitewater centers. Other whitewater paddle boarders I've talked to agree, Riversports Rapids is not the best of the bunch for learning or improving technical whitewater skills on a SUP.
The current sends you into the squared-off walls and barrel blocks. Other parks have sloped walls for easier entry and exit. There are too many underwater hazards in the form of the big blue barrel blocks creating the rapids. When swimming, you will hit these blocks. And when swimming' it's really difficult to regather your gear before you and the board flush to the bottom pools.
That said, they do not market to whitewater paddle boards. Their clients include the US National Team kayakers, rafters, and boaters being guided on a fun day of rapids running in downtown Oklahoma City.
