Many people often complain that their joints hurt when the weather changes. Some even claim they can predict future weather changes based on how their knees and knuckles "feel".
Bone aches when the weather changes are also called weather dependence. According to the WHO, this symptom affects mainly people over 50 years old - about half of all women and a third of men. But similar conditions can be troubling even at a younger age.
General weakness and pain in joints when the weather changes can manifest itself as a consequence of various diseases. The most common causes: Osteochondrosis, Arthritis, Osteoarthritis, Radiculitis, Gout. Also, meteorological dependence can manifest itself against the background of various diseases of the cardiovascular system and the spine.
So how to explain the fact that joints begin to ache precisely when frost sets in or before rain? This is explained by the fact that changes in atmospheric pressure often precede bad weather and thus also changes in pressure in the joint cavity. This is due to the effect on baroreceptors. As the weather changes, the level of cartilage fluid decreases and the tendons and ligaments expand. That is why at this moment a person feels discomfort. There is irritation of the nerve endings, both of the cartilaginous surface of the damaged joint, and on the receptors of the articular bag. A person's bones begin to "ache". For a healthy person, such changes should go unnoticed, but for people with chronic or acute diseases who have suffered an injury, these changes in the weather do not go unnoticed. Damaged or inflamed joints, "worn out" cartilage tissue, inflamed in the area of nerve endings, being subjected to tissue pressure, begin to hurt. When the pressure returns to normal, the symptoms disappear and the pain goes away.
Joint pain in the weather is a sign that negative changes have begun in the cartilage tissue of the joints. Cartilage is involved in the formation of synovial fluid, which acts as a lubricant for the joint and prevents the bones from rubbing during movement. In addition, it acts as a shock absorber during joint stress. When the cartilage tissue becomes thinner, the joint is injured, inflammation and pain occurs - arthrosis develops. Therefore, one of the first symptoms of deterioration of the cartilage tissue is the sensitivity of the joints "to the weather."
