Napa, CA - March for Immigration Reform - April 28th, 2013
A few hundred gathered at Veteran's Memorial Park in Downtown Napa, CA to bring attention to the need for comprehensive immigration reform. Advocates for fairness in the workplace, rights for undocumented youth etc. united under the message "Si Se Puede" ("Yes, it can be done") during a rally and march that spread awareness to hundreds of onlookers.
There are about 11 million undocumented workers living in the United States, and about 12,000 of those live in Napa Valley. "Our countries immigration system is in desperate need of progressive reform...ten years is an unreasonable amount of time for an undocumented immigrant to wait to become a permanent resident." Alex Shantz, co-coordinator of the Napa Valley Green Party.
"Undocumented - UNAFRAID!"
After the rally, the group marched through Downtown Napa, past restaurants and shops full of people who were getting a reminder of their neighbors fight for equality. The march landed at Napa City Hall where many city and county leaders spoke in favor of immigration reform (including Napa's first Latino Council-member, Alfredo Pedroza).
Before ending the day of protest, the march made some stops on a few bridges nearby, to spread the message to passing motorists:
"The People - United - Will never be divided!"
