🗻The Everest Base Camp Trek starts with a 5 hour road trip to Ramechhap Airport
Flights get routed to Ramechhap during the peak trekking seasons: usually mid-March to April and October to mid-December. Outside this period, flights still operate from Kathmandu.
Getting from Kathmandu to Ramechhap is quite an adventurous experience. The first section is through the six lane highway to Bhaktapur. Past Bhaktapur, the two lane road climbs gradually past satellite towns to the Dhulikhel hill station. Here, you leave the Arniko highway and get on the B.P. Koirala Highway. It is also here that the road becomes narrow with a lot of hairpin bends. However, the scenic hills, farms and villages more than make up for it. For the last half of the ride, you will also get to enjoy the view of the Sunkoshi and Tamakoshi Rivers.
🛌Our trekking company opted for a hotel at Mulkot which is a short drive from Manthali Airport, Ramechhap but the variety and quality of accommodation was better here especially as there was a large backlog of trekkers already taking the accommodation nearer the airport. We arrived mid-afternoon after having a nice breakfast in Kathmandu and without having the usual 2 a.m. start. After arrival at Mulkot, we had a 2-hour nap in our room, then went for a gentle walk with our guide across the suspension bridge and along the Sunkoshi river to stretch our legs. It was pretty warm and humid in mid-October.
🚐The next day we left for Ramechhap after breakfast knowing that we would probably not fly today due to the wet and cloudy weather. Remember - planes can't fly in cloudy weather here as the clouds have rocks in them! On arrival at Manthali Airport, the place was full of trekkers crammed into what few cafes there were - this was going to be a long day. There were rows and rows of tents that some trekking companies had set up, some trekkers have been waiting here for 7 days already!
🛫 We overnighted at some very basic accommodation above a shop about a 10-minute walk from the airport. We enjoyed amazing hospitality from the locals here and had a good night's sleep ready for the trekking - fingers crossed!
We set off for the airport at 5.30am in a tuk-tuk and arrived at the airport along with hundreds of trekkers all hoping to get on a plane today. Our guide "lined up" for our boarding passes whilst we stood and watched the chaos. I was trying to work out how exactly they would work out the logistics fairly today (in theory we were behind 7 days worth of backlog). I think we got the 11th flight that our plane made today at around 2pm which I was amazed about. Three planes and a couple of helicopters soon cleared the place out.
👍We were lucky in that we had a month in Nepal and a few days lost to weather was not going to affect our trip too much although, of course, we were keen to get trekking up in the mountains.
We purposely built extra days into our itinerary in case of unexpected delays as last time we met several trekkers who didn't make EBC due to insufficient time to properly acclimatize or they skipped teahouses to make up time and paid the price with altitude sickness or fatigue.
The last thing you want is to be stressed on the trek because you fear of running out of time, it's stressful enough without that worry.
