Conor McGregor, the former UFC champion, may be on the cusp of making a long-awaited return to the octagon. Despite months of speculation and even an entire season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) dedicated to promoting his comeback, there have been no concrete signs of his UFC return. The primary obstacle has been the requirement for six months of USADA drug testing before he can re-enter competition, unless the promotion grants him a controversial exception. McGregor has been absent from the testing pool during this time, citing the need to 'heal.'

However, recent developments suggest a shift in this situation. In a recent Instagram post documenting his sparring session, Conor McGregor hinted at his readiness to meet the USADA requirements. He stated, 'Find my targets. Hit them. Forget the consequences. You're going down. This is fighting. Sparring day with the slick @grozdevnikolay. Always a great spar with the skilled fella.' McGregor went on to mention a potential return, adding, 'Submitted my stuff to Novitzky. Ball rolling ⚽️ see you soon you little light work b—h.'

The possibility of Conor McGregor's return has been met with mixed reactions. While some have labeled his optimism as delusional, with Michael Chandler, in particular, expressing confidence in a future fight against McGregor, others remain skeptical. Chandler believes they will unequivocally meet in the octagon, possibly at UFC 300, provided McGregor is indeed back in the testing pool, as USADA's six-month rule would still allow for participation in that landmark event.

It's important to note that McGregor has previously claimed to have fulfilled USADA requirements back in May, only to not officially rejoin the anti-doping program. According to USADA policies, McGregor simply needs to 'send a return-from-retirement statement through courier, fax, or email to the UFC' to be reinstated in the testing pool. This seemingly straightforward requirement had not been met for months, but McGregor's recent indication that he 'submitted stuff' to UFC's Jeff Novitzky has raised hopes for his return.

As of September 28, 2023, according to USADA's database, McGregor has not undergone drug testing since the third quarter of 2021. Despite being the UFC's most significant pay-per-view draw in history, McGregor has faced a challenging period in his career, with only one victory in the last seven years and a severe leg injury suffered in 2021.

In a separate development, Jon Jones, the UFC heavyweight champion, expressed his admiration for McGregor's recent training footage on Instagram. McGregor's remarkable footwork, despite his past leg injury, garnered praise from Jones and excitement from fans eagerly anticipating his return to the octagon."
