Lookback to this challenge where the aim was to achieve 20 tree pull ups in ONE set, the width of the branch makes these tree pull ups more challenging than the traditional gym pull up bar. If you've been following for a while you'll know that you don't actually need a gym to build strength/tone and burn fat (weight loss) and since freeing myself from the shackles of a traditional gym it has made exercise more creative, interesting, and fun!
So why? 20 pull ups? Well I had never done it before, even having built a solid core foundation, I would always burn out on 17-18..
Therefore, this challenge became bit of an ego challenge for me. See, we're all about the health and longevity and over doing these kind of 'intense/extreme challenges' (that only speed up the ageing process) can cause imbalances/injuries, however, when you have the correct training 'balance' (the 5pillars) occasional challenges are good...
(Challenges help aid motivation and progress - They also help me be a better person)
Especially as I had always wanted to hit 20 strict pulls (no swinging and definitely no kipping pulls that only ruin joint mobility health/integrity, similar to those 'muscle ups') to actually achieve it a different approach was required (similar to any goal you continue to struggle with?)
Even though the last couple of pulls are a little tired...
I was still able to smash past that 18 sticking point and having massaged my ego I haven't bothered with that quantity since (as I was getting into ridiculous numbers of 60+ pull ups in a workout which isn't good for the human body)
Occasionally I will throw a big set in but usually it's more of a health/longevity approach with perhaps a few sets of 5 or 6 strict pull ups just to keep the functional element of being able to pull ones body weight is ideal.
Why the pull up is one of my favourites? Most people can’t do pull ups. I enjoy the pull up for its own sake, but it is also an incredibly efficient exercise. It trains you to stay trim, extra weight makes pull ups harder.
It strengthens practically you entire upper body, it’s incredibly efficient. Finally, it is an important movement that balances out overhead work.
